    Message from The Vice-Chancellor
    May 12 2009

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Friends,

As you may have already learned, HKU has been named the best university in the whole of Asia, by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings.

QS has been partnering with the Times Higher Education Supplement to produce the annual World University Rankings. The University has consistently been ranked as the leading English-language university in Asia.

This is the first time that QS has compiled a set of specifically Asian rankings, using parameters that are considered to be more appropriate to institutions in this region.

These parameters include peer and recruiter review, the international research capabilities of the institution, teaching quality, internationalization of the staff and students, and overseas exchange opportunities for students, among others.

HKU had the best peer evaluations in Asia for research, and the best score in Asia for the number of citations of research papers, these being significant accolades for, and measure of, the quality of the research conducted in HKU. It also had the best figures in Asia for the internationalization of both academic staff and the student body.

The ranking indicates that our strategic direction – with a focus on research and teaching excellence, and the internationalisation of our staff and student body – is being recognised particularly by other academics as well as employers.

While this is obviously gratifying news for HKU, I am especially heartened and encouraged to see that three Hong Kong universities are regarded amongst the top institutions of higher learning in Asia.

As I have said in previous years, many of us at the University regard rankings and league tables with a degree of ambivalence, as there are significant differences in the choice of data and methodologies used in their analyses.

It is nevertheless gratifying to know that HKU consistently ranks among the very best in Asia and the world.

May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work, contributions and dedication to HKU and I look forward to working with you as we strive to bring the University to even greater heights of excellence.
